Wounded Warrior

(May 1, 2010) Reading, Pa - Alvernia University hosted the first annual Reading Wounded Warrior 5k Race/Walk to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, a national organization supporting wounded veterans. The race is hosted around the nation to honor and support the daily sacrifices made by the brave men and women in all branches of the United States Military. The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project is to honor and empower wounded warriors by raising awareness and enlisting the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of severely injured service members.

Golf Community Service
April 27, 2010 (Reading, Pa) - Alvernia's Golf team met at the Pagoda, a popular landmark in Reading that overlooks the city and is lit up beautifully at night. The team was not just there to look at the scenery; however, they were there to meet up with the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Berks County. This would be the second annual Big Brother, Big Sister and Alvernia Golf Team outing.
South Reading Youth Initiative
March 11, 2010 (Reading, Pa) - The Women's Basketball team hosted a basketball clinic for the South Reading Youth Initiative (SRYI). There were about 40 children that came to this event; a great turnout.
Men's Lacrosse Fire Fighters
Alvernia University is an institution based on the Franciscan core values, to Learn, to Love, to Serve. Two members of the Alvernia Men's Lacrosse Team have taken these values to a different level.

Reading, Pa (Monday, January 18, 2010) - The Alvernia Community has begun a service tradition this past Martin Luther King's Day. The Martin Luther King Jr. (winter semester), Earth Day (spring semester), and St. Francis Day (fall semester) are a series of three days in which the Alvernia Community has allocated for servicing the surrounding community. This three day a year tradition so far has been a great success. Members of different clubs, majors, departments, and even sports teams participated in this day of service. Volunteers reported to the Cafeteria on main campus where they were divided into groups to visit different community organizations including Opportunity House, the Literacy Council, Lifeline of Berks County, Mary's Shelter, and the Nativity Lutheran Church.

12.21 | Field Hockey, Community Engagement
November 23, 2009 (St. Peter's Church, Reading PA) - The field hockey team went to St. Peter's for the after school program. The team helped with homework and once the kids were completed with homework they had the opportunity to complete three arts and crafts. Station 1: a Thanksgiving wreath and listing everything they were thankful for. Station 2: coloring of Thanksgiving coloring books. Station 3: Thanksgiving Turkeys made out of construction paper. The kids really enjoyed the entire ensemble of events.

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 17, 2009) - The Crusader Baseball team has been back in action at Lauer's Park Elementary School teaching the youth of the Reading community the fundamentals of baseball. This is the second year that the team has participated in this month-long community service event at the school. Crusader players and coaches took time every Tuesday during October to play wiffle-ball and teach baseball techniques to twenty children ranging from third to fifth grade.

Pottsville, Pa. (November 7, 2009) - The Alvernia Crusader Softball Team volunteered their Saturday to assist at the Family Reading Festival in Pottsville. This is the second year that your Crusaders have helped this program become a great success. The Crusaders assisted with various arts and crafts projects while helping children with reading skills.

Reading, Pa. (October 7, 2009) - Reading Tennis is jamming again. More than 30 kids from age six through fourteen that are part of the Reading Tennis program visited Alvernia University Wednesday October 7th in the PEC where they played tennis against the Crusaders Women's Basketball team, as well as members of the Men's and Women's Tennis teams. The event was titled 'The Reading Tennis Jam' and the city youth took the big trophy with a thrilling 199-198 overtime victory. City Tennis Director, Larry Zerbe, and Crusaders Women's Basketball coach, Kevin Calabria, teamed up for a second time to connect Reading's city youth with the Alvernia Women's hoop team members.
