Aston, Pa (Saturday, March 10) - A late power play goal off the stick of Anthony Froio (Glenside, Pa / Interboro HS) sent the Vern into a sudden death overtime in the DVCHC Championship game. Unfortunately Penn State Brandywine tallied the game winner ten minutes into the first overtime period for their first conference championship. Froio carried the Crusader's offensively with a strong performance which included a “hat trick” and voted DVCHC Championship game MVP.
Aston, Pa (Sunday February 28, 2010) - Only one game remains on the Delaware Valley College Hockey Conference schedule for the 2009-2010 season; the Championship game on March 6th. Alvernia punched its ticket to be one of the last two teams standing with an impressive 8-7 semifinal victory over the # 2 seed Richard Stockton College. Alvernia avenged two regular season losses to Stockton including an 8-0 laugher back in November. That was then and this is now. Alvernia will return to play in its third consecutive conference final.
Aston, Pa (Saturday Feb. 27) - Christian Baron (Philadelphia, Pa / LaSalle College HS) scored just 0:45 seconds into the overtime period to give Alvernia a dramatic come from behind first round playoff victory over East Stroudsburg University # 6 seed. The Crusader's # 2 seed were facing first round elimination of the DVCHC playoff tournament trailing 2-1 with just over three minutes remaining. Michael Christie (Collegeville, Pa / Perk. Valley HS) slipped a sleeper shot from behind the net using ESU goaltender as a backboard to even the score pushing the game to the sudden death overtime period.
Kevin Mengel
Reading, Pa (Sunday Jan. 31, 2010) - Kevin Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa / Boyertown HS) top shelved the game winning goal with 0:38 seconds remaining in regulation. The late goal helped stave off a late third period rally by the visiting East Stroudsburg University Warriors. The Vern completed the two game regular season series sweep over East Stroudsburg. Alvernia moved into a tie for second place in the DVCHC's tough American Conference.

West Chester, Pa (Friday Jan. 29, 2010) - Good goaltending can be the great equalizer. The Crusader's played 60 minutes of hockey on a tilted sheet of ice pointed at Alvernia net minder Michael Restuccia (Chester Springs, Pa / Bishop Shanahan HS). Restuccia stopped a staggering 76 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss to Penn State Delco. The Vern managed to take advantage of limited scoring opportunities while Restuccia turned in the best goaltending performance in Crusader history.

Reading, Pa (Monday, January 18, 2010) - The Alvernia Community has begun a service tradition this past Martin Luther King's Day. The Martin Luther King Jr. (winter semester), Earth Day (spring semester), and St. Francis Day (fall semester) are a series of three days in which the Alvernia Community has allocated for servicing the surrounding community. This three day a year tradition so far has been a great success. Members of different clubs, majors, departments, and even sports teams participated in this day of service. Volunteers reported to the Cafeteria on main campus where they were divided into groups to visit different community organizations including Opportunity House, the Literacy Council, Lifeline of Berks County, Mary's Shelter, and the Nativity Lutheran Church.

Reading, Pa (Sunday Jan. 24, 2007) - The Vern received another blow at moving towards an elusive spot in the Atlantic Region Rankings with the Farmingdale State Rams coasting to another easy win. The Crusasder's lost the two game home and home series with Farmingdale by a combined 16- 2 margin. The Rams handed the Vern an 8-1 loss in both meetings. Farmingdale currently ranked #2 in the Atlantic Region had little problem finding separation from the Crusader's once they discovered their legs after the long trip.

Bryn Athyn, Pa. (Friday Jan. 22) - Alvernia returned to the scene of the crime 8 years later. The Crusaders traveled back in time and reversed the curse. January 2002 marked the historic first game of Alvernia ice hockey and it was not a pretty sight. The Vern was greeted with a disturbing 17-0 loss to a then powerful Bryn Athyn College squad.
