March 14, 2008 (Reading, PA) - Alvernia improved their conference record to 4-0 this afternoon with a sweep of Eastern University in their home opener.  Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) secured the win in the first game giving up only three hits and one unearned run over seven innings.  Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity) came in in relief of starter Megan Sowders (Atco, NJ/Ammonton) in the first inning of the second game and shut down Eastern after the first inning for the win.

Eastern jumped ahead 1-0 in the second inning of the first game when a single and a passed ball put Tanya Guthrie on second base and she came around to score when catcher Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, MD/Catoctin) dropped a third strike and made an errant throw to first base.  This would be the only time that Eastern successfully made their way to third base.

The Crusaders evened the score in the bottom of the third inning when Michele Kassab (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) drove a single to the right side of the field to score Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine) who had reached on a fielder's choice and promptly stole second base.  Alvernia would add two more runs in their half of the sixth inning on and RBI triple by Jackie Rhoads (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) who would score on a passed ball herself.

The second game of the afternoon saw Eastern strike early for three runs in the top of the first inning off of three hits, and error and one walk.  Relief pitcher Williams came in to get three outs in the first inning and settled things down for the rest of the game.

The Crusaders would rally in the second inning to go up 6-3.  Catcher Colleen Ambrosius (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) started the rally with a walk which was quickly followed by singles from Leah Crimi (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame), Megan McCafferty (Millville, NJ/Millville) and and RBI single from Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg).  Kassab brought three more in to score when she laced a single to right center field that was misplayed to allow all three runs to score and Kassab to advance to third base.  Alvernia would connect for another six runs in the third inning highlighted by a three-run home run from Rhoads for her second of the season.  Williams continued to shut down the Eagles allowing only four hits and no earned runs over five innings of work.

Alvernia will be back in action Wed. March 19th at home for a double-header against local rival PSU-Berks.
