2008 ECAC South Bracket

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 3, 2008) – Alvernia College was invited to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region Men’s Basketball Championship as the fifth seed and will travel to fourth-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy College on Wednesday for a first round game in the eight-team tournament at 8:00 p.m. This will be the fourth meeting between the two conference rivals this season.

The tournament final four will be hosted at the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinal round. The semifinal dates and times will be announced once the host is determined.

Alvernia won the first meeting of the season with the Griffins rather handily at home 104-80 with junior Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) and sophomore Matt King (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Pius X) recording season-highs in the game with 35 and 27 points respectively. The Crusaders managed just 30 percent from the floor in game two falling 76-62 at the Griffin Complex. The Griffins took the rubber match, 73-66 at the Physical Education Center in the semifinals of the PAC Championships.

Alvernia is making its fifth appearance in the ECAC Tournament and first since a 62-56 loss at the University on Scranton in the opening round in 2005. The Crusaders are 3-3 in ECAC games having won the ECAC South Title in 1995 with wins over Grove City and Allentown (now DeSales). This is the eighth straight season the Crusaders will take part in a post season tournament following the conference championships.
