Reading, Pa. (Mar. 3, 2008) – Alvernia College junior Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) was named Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year as announced by the organization on Monday. Shawell is the third straight Crusader to earn the award and the sixth overall.

Sophomore Matt King (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Pius X) joined Shawell on the first team and junior Tyrone Bradley (Chester, Pa./Chester) was named honorable mention. This is the second straight first team award for Shawell and the first conference awards for King and Bradley. King won the PAC rookie of the year last season as a freshman.

Shawell leads the Crusaders in scoring this season at 21.1 points per game as is 42nd in Division III. In the Crusaders final game of the regular season he became the 20th player in men’s history to reach 1,000 career points. He scored in double figures in every game of the season including a season-high 35 in a home win over Gwynedd-Mercy College back in January. He tallied two double-doubles this season, the second with a career-high 16 rebounds in a win at Neumann College.

Shawell was named PAC player of the week three times this season and earned d3hoops.com team of the week and ECAC South player of the week honors following a 3-0 week during which he averaged 32.7 points per game.

King is second on the team in scoring at 15.0 points per game and is second in rebounding to Bradley at 7.0 caroms per contest. He led the team in double-doubles this season with seven of them and had a stretch of nine straight games in double figures in scoring midway through the season that included his season-high of 27 points in a home win over Gwynedd-Mercy.

Bradley was the heart and soul of the Crusaders lineup leading the team with 7.4 rebounds per game. He pulled an astounding 106 rebounds off the offensive glass and chipped in with 8.6 points per game.  Bradley was also named to the All-PAC Sportsmanship Team.

Zach Straining (2006) and Garrett Etzel (2007) started the current streak of player of the year awards that will end with the Crusaders heading to the MAC Freedom Conference next season. Previous winners for Alvernia include Dave Kapono (1995), Damien Hunter (1997, 1998) and, Lonnie Walker (1999). This is the eighth time the Crusaders have had two players on the All-PAC First Team.
