GAME 2 BOX SCORE

Wednesday March 5, 2008 (Orlando, FL) - Alvernia fell to 3-4 with an eight-inning 8-4 loss to Susquehanna and a 13-1 loss at the hands of Malone College.  Game one saw Alvernia battle back from an early deficit to tie the game before eventually falling in the eighth inning.  In their loss to Malone the Crusaders managed only four hits over the six innings of play.

In the first game of the day starting pitcher Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity BVM) ran into trouble early against Susquehanna allowing three runs in the first inning including a two-run homerun.  Williams helped herself out when she lined a single up the middle to score freshman Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) who lead off the game with a solid single and advanced to second on a passed ball.  Alvernia held Susquehanna scoreless in the second inning and added two more of their own when Lisa James (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Wood) and Michele Kassab (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) connected for RBI singles.

Susquehanna took their third lead of the day in the fifth inning. They strung together three hits and a walk to take the 4-3 lead.  Their lead was short lived as the Crusaders struck with a run of their own in their half of the fifth inning.  Freshman Kassab lead off the inning with her second hit of the day and came around to score thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Jackie Rhoads (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) and an error by the Susquehanna third baseman.

The tie lasted until the eighth inning when the international tie breaker rule came into effect placing a runner on second base.  Susquehanna began the eighth inning with four hits in a row and then capitalized on two Alvernia errors to put up four runs in the eighth inning.  Alvernia was unable to muster any runs of their own and fell 8-4 for their second loss to Susquehanna this week.  Kassab finished with a 3-for-4 performance including a double and RBI and a run scored.

The second game of the day saw Alvernia once again fall behind 3-0 after the top of the first inning, however this time they did not even the score.  Malone College took advantage of five Crusader errors throughout the game to post a run in the fourth inning, four more runs in the fifth inning and another five in the sixth.  Sophomore Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine) had two out of Alvernia's four hits.

Alvernia now sits at 3-4 with one game remaining on their Spring Training trip against Webber International tomorrow evening at 6:30 pm.
