Reading, Pa. (Apr. 14, 2008) – Alvernia College earned four weekly awards from the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference including Steve DeBarberie (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley) earning baseball player and pitcher of the week respectively, McKenna Shafer (Delran, N.J./Cinnaminson) earning women’s lacrosse co-player of the week, and Michele Kassab (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) earning softball player of the week.

DeBarberie had a ridiculous week at the plate for the Crusaders who were 5-0 in league play. He batted .786 with 11 base hits in 14 at-bats. He scored nine runs and knocked in 16 on the strength of five home runs. He finished the week with a 2.214 slugging percentage and at one point homered in three straight at-bats against Eastern.

Zellers earned pitcher of the week honors by throwing six scoreless innings in an 8-1 win at Albright while striking out nine.

Kassab was one of several players to post an impressive week for the softball team as she lengthened her current hitting streak to 14 games. She batted .611 in eight games this past week with 11 hits in 18 at-bats. She scored six runs and knocked in 11 picking up four doubles and a pair of home runs. She also drew five walks and was perfect in three stolen base attempts bring her season total to 8-for-8.

Shafer was the driving force behind the second conference win of the season for the women’s lacrosse team as she netted a school-record nine goals in a 20-11 home win over Immaculata. She also tied her own personal record for points in a game at nine. She finished the week with 14 goals and one assist in three games.

Athletes of the Week
Softball
Batted .600 (7-12) in two conference matchups for the Crusaders this week. Two doubles, one triple, and two homeruns contributed to four RBIs for Sorrentino, also plated 6 runs scored.
Baseball
Batted .667 (10-15) with three doubles, one triple, and three RBIs in a 2 win, 2 lose week for the Crusaders. Also scored 9 runs and was perfect in stolen base attempts. (3-3)

(May 12, 2008) - Seven players from the Alvernia College baseball team were named to the All-Conference teams by the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference led by senior catcher Dale Curry (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) who earned the Crusaders' seventh Player of the Year award in the last eight years and freshman pitcher Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) who earned PAC Rookie of the Year.

(May 8, 2008) - The participating coaches in the 2008 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Baseball Championship selected an All-Tournament Team on Thursday with eight players from champion Gwynedd-Mercy College making the squad including junior infielder Tim McMenamin (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) and sophomore outfielder Dan Strack (Langhorne, Pa./Holy Ghost) who were named Tournament Co-MVPs.
