Reading, Pa. (Apr. 19, 2008) – Shenandoah University scored two third-quarter goals and three in the fourth en route to a 9-4 win over Alvernia College Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.

Alvernia (1-12, 1-6 PAC) got goals from four different players including seniors Tom Novak (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and Martin Novia (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) in the final home game of their careers. Sophomore Chris Baker (Exeter, Pa./Exeter) and freshman Ben Stidham (Glen Burnie, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) also netted goals for the Crusaders.

The Hornets (8-2, 4-2 PAC) were led by James Gonzalez (Greenbelt, Md./Villa Julie), Ben Page (Herndon, Va./Herndon), and Richard Michael (Oakton, Va./Oakton) who each tallied two goals apiece.
Gonzalez opened the scoring with his 16th of the season and Novak answered for the Crusaders with his 30th of the season and 89th of his career. Page tallied both of his goals to close out the first quarter scoring and put the Hornets up 3-1.

Novia and Baker scored back-to-back goals in the second, both assisted by freshman Chris Bakes (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) to knot the score at 3-3. Shenandoah scored just over a minute after Baker’s goal to hit the halftime break with a 4-3 lead.

Gonzalez netted the second of two in the third quarter and Michael’s first of the day put the guests up 7-3 with 10 minutes remaining. Alvernia was able to stop the four-goal streak on Stidham’s unassisted goal, but SU scored the last two of the game for the 9-4 win.

Alvernia goalie Joseph Cepparulo (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) stopped 12 shots for the Crusaders and Rodney Mattison (Pasadena, Md./Anne Arundel CC) made 14 saves for the Hornets.

Alvernia will play a non-conference game at Kean University on Tuesday before wrapping up the season at Centenary next Saturday.
