Saturday April 26, 2008 (Hackettstown, NJ) – The Crusaders won their 30
th game of the season with a conference doubleheader sweep of Centenary College this afternoon at Centenary. Alvernia took game one 5-3 after a two-run home run from
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) gave the Crusaders the 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Game two saw Alvernia score four runs in four different innings for the 4-1 victory.
The Crusaders took the 1-0 lead in game one in the top of the second inning when senior
Beth Jablonowski (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) drove a double to the right-center field fence to score
Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, MD/Catoctin) who had reached with a two-out single. Their lead would not last for long as Centenary put up three runs of their own with a bases-loaded double from Jolyn Veres.
Neither team would score again until the top of the sixth inning when
Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity) lined a two-RBI double to left field to tie the game at three. Starting pitcher
Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) would hold the Cyclones scoreless in their half of the sixth inning. The top of the seventh inning saw Jablonowski lead off with her third hit of the day, a single up the middle and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a pop-out, Sorrentino took the second pitch she saw over the right field fence to give Alvernia the 5-3 lead.
Sorrentino began the second game of the doubleheader with a triple and scored on a bunt from
Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine) and Centenary quickly answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Alvernia would add another run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Sorrentino and their third run in the fifth inning thanks to a Cyclone error. The Crusaders put one more run on the board in the sixth inning when
Colleen Ambrosius (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) connected for a two-out RBI single to left field.
With the wins Alvernia is now 16-4 in the PAC and will await other results to determine their final seeding for the conference playoffs which being Wednesday April 30.
