Reading, PA (May 13, 2008) – Senior attack McKenna Shafer (Delran, N.J./Cinnaminson) highlighted the women’s lacrosse season with a some spectacular individual efforts. She broke the season record in goals with 54 and points with 63 becoming the career leader in both categories with 159 career goals and 188 career points. Shafer was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Player of the Week on April 14 after scoring 14 goals with one assist in a 1-2 week. Her week was highlighted by a nine-goal effort in a 20-11 win over Immaculata.

Freshman Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert’s) jumped all the way into the top 10 in career scoring with 53 points. She tallied 47 goals and 47 ground balls, both good for second on the team, and six assists, and sits seventh on the career points list after one season. Sippel was by far the team’s leader in draw controls grabbing 59.

Senior Katie O’Brien (Boothwyn, Pa./Garnet Valley) was third on the team in scoring this season with 26 goals and two assists. She finished her career third on the all-time goals list with 75, fourth in assists with 19, and fourth in career points with 87. O’Brien was second in draw controls with 32 and led the team with 51 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers. She scored six goals in a game twice this season.

Sophomore Tara Walls (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) was the fourth and final Crusaders to reach double figures in goals this season with 22. She was second on the team with six assists and moved into the top 10 in career points with 50, tied with 2007 graduate Karen Hutton.

Junior Chrissy Paris (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) scored three goals for the Crusaders and three other players Brittany Veith (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor), Jamie Murtha (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), and Kara Ross (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) added one goal apiece.

Senior Krystal Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) contributed with 32 ground balls, 16 draw controls, and eight caused turnovers. Ross added 28 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers and Kristen Rutledge (Howell, N.J./Howell) finished with 26 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers.

Alvernia opened the season with a loss at the University of Scranton and followed that playing in the Tri-Co Tournament for the first time. The tournament, hosted by Swarthmore College, raised over $6,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. The teams collected pledges per goal scored in the tournament. Alvernia joined Swarthmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Gwynedd-Mercy, and Moravian at the event going 0-2 in game play against Haverford and Bryn Mawr.

The Crusaders picked up wins this season against conference foes Cedar Crest and Immaculata.

Junior Janelle Fulmer (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and sophomore Amanda Odenwalt (Lancaster, Pa./The Janus School) split time in net combining for a .409 save percentage and an 18.27 goals against average. Fulmer spent most of the time in net playing 554 of the teams 900 minutes.

Shafer moved to second on the career assist list just one behind Tracy Pyne (2002-05) who leads with 30. Shafer broke the school record for assists in a game with four against Neumann on April 1. Fulmer tied the school record for saves in a game with 23 against Marywood on April 8. She also became the all-time leader in saves with 328 in her career.

As a team the Crusaders set a new mark for saves in a season with 190.
Athletes of the Week
Baseball
Batted .667 (10-15) with three doubles, one triple, and three RBIs in a 2 win, 2 lose week for the Crusaders. Also scored 9 runs and was perfect in stolen base attempts. (3-3)
Softball
Batted .600 (7-12) in two conference matchups for the Crusaders this week. Two doubles, one triple, and two homeruns contributed to four RBIs for Sorrentino, also plated 6 runs scored.

Reading, Pa. (June 19, 2008) - Alvernia College had 60 of the 462 student-athletes honored on the All-Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Academic Team. The baseball program has the most members with 14 and softball wasn't far behind with 11 members.

(Apr. 23, 2008) - Alvernia College senior McKenna Shafer (Delran, N.J./Cinnaminson) scored a game-high six goals, but Misericordia University posted 14 second-half goals to break a 7-7 halftime tie en route to a 21-14 victory Wednesday afternoon Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. (April 19, 2008) - Eight different Griffins scored in a 19-3 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference win over Alvernia.

The Griffins (9-6, 7-2 PAC) led 9-0 at halftime, and never looked back.

Senior McKenna Shafer (Delran, NJ / Cinnaminson) scored twice for the Crusaders (2-11, 2-7 PAC). Freshman Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert) added another goal to start off the second half.

For Gwynedd, senior Kalli Bass (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and freshman Colleen Dellostretto (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) led the attack as each netted four goals.
