Reading, Pa. (July 21, 2008) – Alvernia College junior Brian Longo (Uncasville, Conn./Montville) has been selected as the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) for the 2008-09 school year.

Longo, a relief pitcher for the Crusaders, was both surprised and excited when he heard of his selection. “It’s a great accomplishment for me personally,” said Longo in an email interview, “but even greater for Alvernia considering it will be our first season in a new conference.”

Longo was part of Alvernia’s Emerging Leaders program as a freshman and Vice President of the Alvernia SAAC as a sophomore. He also served Alvernia as a member of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) SAAC during the school’s final year in the conference. Longo will continue to represent the baseball team as a SAAC member at Alvernia while leading the student organization in the MASCAC.

Longo was a 3-year letter winner at Montville High School and set the all-time wins record for a pitcher going 20-2. He was a member of the first baseball state champion with an 8-0 record as a senior.
In two years on the mound for the Crusaders Longo has a 5-1 record with six games started and 16 appearances. He has a career 4.50 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 48.0 innings.

Alvernia won eight Championships in 16 seasons in the PAC and moves to the MASCAC Freedom Conference with Delaware Valley, DeSales, Eastern, FDU-Florham, King’s, Manhattanville, Misericordia, and Wilkes for the 2009 season.

The Student Athlete Advisory Committee is an NCAA sponsored organization with members chosen for each of a school’s sponsored sports. According to the NCAA, the SAAC is made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Committees exist on the institution, conference, and Divisional levels.
