Harleysville, Pa. (October 4, 2009) - The Crusader Softball team concluded their non-traditional season with a three-game tournament in Harleysville, Pa. on Sunday.  Alvernia opened their day defeating Immaculata University 4-0, then downed Gwynedd-Mercy 5-4 before a tight game over Ursinus College that ended in 5-0 favor for the Crusaders.

In the opener Alvernia managed 11 hits, including two hits a piece from freshman Michelle Hermanns, junior Samantha Geisinger, sophomore Angela Cook and freshman Deanna Dungee.  The Crusaders put up their first run in the third inning thanks to an RBI double from Hermanns to score Dina Chiappelli who had reached with a one-out single.  Alvernia added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning for some insurance thanks to three hits in a row to start the inning.

In the next game of the day, Gwynedd-Mercy jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Alvernia would pick away, scoring one run in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings before finally plating the go-ahead run off the bat of Geisinger for the 5-4 win.

Alvernia wrapped up the day with a 5-0 win over Ursinus.  The Crusaders scored early in the bottom of the second and the game would remain 1-0 until Alvernia went up 2-0 in the sixth inning.  The Crusaders would string together three hits in the seventh to plate three more runs.

Chiappelli was 4-for-7 with two walks, freshman Hermanns was 4-for-8 with two doubles and junior catcher Geisinger was 4-for-9 on the day.  The Crusader pitching staff combined to give up just four runs over 21 innings of work.
