2009 Spring Academic Team Announced

Reading, Pa. (June 8, 2009) - 18 Crusader student-athletes were named to the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Spring Academic Honor Roll as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon.  This Honor Roll comprises student-athletes of sophomore class standing or higher who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and completed the playing season in good standing.
There were 442 total student-athletes who were placed on the MASCAC Spring Academic Honor Roll. Student-athletes are selected from baseball, softball, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s track and field, women’s track and field, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and golf. From Alvernia, seven members from the baseball team, three members from the softball, golf and men’s tennis teams, and two members of the women’s lacrosse teams were placed on the Honor Roll. 
From the baseball team, Eric Focht, Mike Lloyd, Brian Longo, Reid Martin, Chris Simoncini, Steve Smerecki and Todd Speilman were honored. Dina Chiappelli, Michelle Jensen, and Rhiannon Sorrentino were honored from the softball team. Kenneth Dearstyne, Ryan Lineaweaver, and Zachary Lockwood were honored from men’s tennis. From the golf team, Matt Galvin, Nathan Maninno and Derek Stewart were honored, and Kara Ross and Kristen Rutledge were honored from women’s lacrosse.

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2009) - Homecoming and Family weekend at Alvernia University culminated Sunday afternoon in the induction ceremony of the 2009 Class of the Athletics Hall of Fame. Inducted on Sunday were Cristie Ansbach, Daimen Hunter, Carl Solarek, Jr., Steve Westley, and the 1991 Baseball team.

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 18, 2009) - On September 15th the Department of Athletics and Recreation collaborated with Student Activities to host a ‘ThinkFast' game show on campus. This event was attended by many students on campus including a large percentage of Alvernia's student athletes. This presentation was part of the NCAA CHAMPS/LifeSkills initiative which was created to support the student-athlete development initiatives of NCAA member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the context of higher education.

The Alvernia University Department of Athletics & Recreation mourns the loss of NCAA President Myles Brand. Brand, NCAA president since January 2003, died September 16 after a nine-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
